there is no sin like anger, nor is there any penance like patience.
think about the faults of anger itself, how it is truly your greatest enemy. there is no other fault that burns the mind like anger. if you really have an enemy, it is not that deluded person who spoke unkindly or treated you poorly. you should be angry at yourself for harboring your own greatest enemy in your own mind. if there is one thing that will cause you the greatest harm you could ever experience in samsara, it is the anger within your own mind. reflect on the dangers of anger and ill will and on the virtues and benefits of love and compassion. your aversion will gradually weaken, the hold of anger will loosen, and the impulse toward love will grow because your mind will be freed from the bonds of self-centeredness and malice toward others.
anger itself is an attachment, a distraction outward, a kind of reverse way of relating to externals. if one harbors the stain of anger within ones heart, ones mind cannot possibly experience peace.
anger rages like a great fire. desire flows like a great flood. ignorance is like dense, dark night. pride is like a stony mountain. jealousy is like a red gale.
